Books are used to give players advantages, such as powers, XP, and quality-of-life updates like seeing sell prices.
You can always check which powers you have in the section Special Items & Powers of the player tab.
When reading a book giving experience in a certain skill, players will earn 250 XP in that skill after reading the book along with a message saying "You have learned a few things about [skill]." The Book Of Stars will give 250 XP in all skills. If the player has unlocked access to the Mastery Cave, skill books will earn the player 250 Mastery points and the Book of Stars will earn the player 1250 Mastery points. Skill books, the Book Of Stars, and the Queen Of Sauce Cookbook do not count for the Well-Read Achievement.
After reading a book that gives a power, they can be read again for 100 XP in whichever skill they are associated with.
All books can also be gifted to Penny as a loved gift.
